Financial literacy isn't a skill — it's a lifestyle. Take it from Curtis "Wall Street" Carroll. As an incarcerated individual, Caroll knows the power of a dollar. While in prison, he taught himself how to read and trade stocks, and now he shares a simple, powerful message: we all need to be more savvy with our money.

I hope he makes it big. this man has public speaking skills like no other. they should’ve given him a bigger audience.
AGREE…. HE NEEDS TO HAVE HIW OWN PODCAST, ACCOUNT ON SO MANY SOC.MED…. WISH HOM DOING WELL….
He needs a bigger audience like what it’s going to be posted on YouTube on Tedx were millions will see drrrrr
Yeah thats the least of his worries what he came from
Still needs to get rid of the “aksed himself”
I vote this Ted talk as a top 10 ted talk ever. Like if you agree.
First, how was it his choice if he was born into a family of crack addicts? with his elders telling him to steal, he started off by saying no one told him how to do anything other than commit crime… and it was his choice…. that’s the first thing that tries to remove white supremacy…. learning to trade stocks isn’t hard, as he said, the hardest part is the initial capital which poor people don’t have, as he alluded to when talking about the 60 year with 200 hundred dollars… this is all make white people feel good talk, def. not a top 10 ted talk
I agree, it was absolutely captivating ✨
@Your conscious
He is speaking *with* emotion. The gist of *speaking from emotion* is that, when doing so, one is unable to be rational, logical or consider past their charged perspective.
@I LOVE YOU
It was his choice because our actions *are* our choice, being *born into a family of crack addicts* does not predetermine your future.
* that’s the first thing that tries to remove white supremacy* ? *White supremacy* as commonly understood does not exist, it is a social engineering *divide and conquer* tool. Many high profile black figures dispel this myth, some of which are: Morgan Freeman, Thomas Sowell, Mohamed Ali, Lary Elder…
*learning to trade stocks isn’t hard…the hardest part is the initial capital which poor people don’t have* The American *poor* are by far the richest poor in the world. Amazon stock price in June 1997 was $1.52, if you had bought 100 shares it would have been worth $152, today those 100 shares would be worth $176,200. Nobody is stopping you but YOU. That $1.52 you say poor people *can’t* afford would be worth $1,762. today, and that’s just one single share, imagine if the many *poor* people had forgone their $120 Nike shoes and their $400 PS1, they could have bought stock instead and have 600K today….but they had to have those shoes and that Playstation….the *supremacy* that exists is not white…it is *ignorance* and ignorance is a *choice*.
He learned to read and trade stocks in prison. Meanwhile, US public schools barely teach economics🤔. Something is extremely wrong with the US education system. Parents in urban communities must apply for a “great school”. Then wait to be chosen from a lottery. 😒
@Leslie Marshall They do that everywhere black people are.Even in the Caribbean. They make in hard for the poor to find work.Education is not free so most family can’t afford to sent their children to school. So some most turn to crime, or mothers leave immigrated for work leaving their children behind.
If 10k black women stopped buying weave for a year. THERES YOUR SCHOOL.
But black peoples biggest problem REMAINS they spend money on WHAT THEY WANT. And beg for WHAT THEY NEED.
Until that changes we will be talking about this FOREVER.
Well ya cuz they don’t contribute much to property taxes 🤡🤡🤡
The smartest people that i have ever come across are always self taught just like this guy!
I agree, there are a few reasons why. One, you are doing the research on your own so you are able to soak up what you learn easier because you have interest in it. Two, you are able to take all the information and form your own opinion about it. Most of the time when learning from others, we take what they say as fact and never “fact-check” what they say…I’ve learned by doing my own research I can find more truth.
Thats because they have time to digest information acquired and compound that data while applying the knowledge to see a clearer picture.
Jim Rohn once said “Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.” You sir, are very observant.
The 1000k people who disliked this video must really hate themselves .
@Lean Viking It’s funny how your comment alludes to white people being racist, but your comment in itself was racist.
Zay Gardner how is trump practicing racism 🤦🏽♂️
White liberals eat this stuff up.
I’d like to think it’s the people expecting to hear about how he Learned to read and trade stocks and not hear about our economic and social problems???
I have done MBA in FInance and this is the best lecture I have ever heard on Personal Finance. He truly deserves standing ovation!!!
I thought he was actually going to talk bout trading based on the title.

Take the course 😉
Colyers Big businesses and business professionals seek him for financial advice from his prison cell. He’s help prison employees manage their own retirement accounts. I found about him years ago. He’s the real deal I’m impressed to see him on TED
This guy’s got communication skills. He is very articulate and has a good sense of humor and is very intelligent. He does not sound like one who has been illiterate for 22 years of his life. Determination is powerful.
Are you saying “he speaks so well”
Adam Kerwin no that doesn’t work look at the profile the dude is black himself
His enthusiasm and happiness about his ability to read. Brought tears to my eyes.
He is so intelligent.
@generic username I mean I understand the nuances that you are differentiating but you can’t deny this dude is intelligent. This inference not only comes from his speech, but the fact that he learned the stock market..
Yeah, me too. I, automatically, started flowing tears down my cheeks. I wonder what the family of the person he killed is thinking.
Shane Watson you never know what people go through so stfu
Stephanie Williams why is your skin color relevant to the purpose of your comment?
lol it kinda cruel that country have to send people to jail to lets them start to educate themselves lol..is that why they incarcerated so many blacks that didnt learn in public schools>? lmfao
All ted talks are inspiring and wonderful but this is certainly among some of the greater ones
The power of opening a book 📖 and ignoring your mobile phone 📱 at least 2 hours daily.
i go against the grain especially since i dont do social media and have 30+ books and counting i read in my phone.
yeah tell that to my younger self that learned more English from her phone than her school
Wow, this says a lot about society… Phone bad- book good. 🤔😔😔
I was in his class at soledad. When it was a main line. I finished at Tracy. I’m investing right now
WHAT BOOKS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND??? THANKS IN ADVANCE!
Good for you!!! Wish you the best and much success.
@Andre Crapps start with something like Phil Town or Mohnish Pabrai. Or check out Hamish Hodder youtube channel, he explaines the basics nicely.
Unbelievable delivery. Most authentic TED talk I’ve seen.

Yeah this guy is amazing at speeches and his topic is perfect.
If you chart stocks the ‘Wyckoff Method’, you can look at the charts with blurred vision, and you’ll see rough cartoons of bears and bulls… Make a tiny pointy pendulum on the finest gold chain you can buy, to use for yes/no answers…
Troy Tucker you a real nutmeg
Deep! Sway in the morning/Vlad TV bought me here. This is powerful. Good speaker, and he makes a lot of sense. I’m going to show this vid/lecture to my family.
Ditch Vlad TV. It’s dope existence is to focus our minds on the negativity. Talks like these actually enrich our lives.
All of ya’ll close minded people who did not like this man ‘s message is why America is falling down instead of rising . Big mistake on your part . Ignorance controlls you . This man is speaking 100 % truth .
@Adam Kerwin but he has money in stocks
Where exactly are these closed minded people at?
Adam Kerwin he who calls one a “know it all” must not know nothing himself.
According to another interview, he said he is “scheduled to be released, in 2020” Thank God He is Rehabilitated, Positive, Productive; and an Asset.
@Marithza Gaspard You just have to mention ‘God’ every time someone achieves something that people like you can’t. Why is everything God? Maybe give credit to him, himself. Yep. Maybe God wasn’t involved. Maybe he was just intelligent enough. Have you ever thought about this?
@Gorilla Cookies I know. Every single time someone achieves something hard-to-do and/or amazing people start muttering on about ‘God’ being the reason of his/her achievements.
@Guste ‘R’ Humanity has only ever gone backwards being religious, religion has never helped us modernize. Many large, religious empires, such as the Ottoman empire, failed to modernize and develop along with many other (less religion focused) empires because of one main problem, religion. So, being atheist isn’t necessarily a bad thing, unless of course for people like you who (TRY TO) use it as an insult.
@Marithza Gaspard God dont exist and thats that
FACTS💯💯💯
I wonder how many brilliant men will never know just how brilliant they are

I am a 33 year old South African ex-con. I also read my first book 📖 in prison. I’m a space of 4 years, among other things I did in prison, I read over 100 books, wrote a book called, Success & Wealth through the Bible, and I learnt how to trade forex. Nice video my brother.👌
Lungelo Shandu praise God. May the Lord bless your Forex.
9 months into the stock market and i’m already $23,700 richer.
Whoever thought one could earn extra income trading stocks with the help of a stock broker.
My first two trading months have been hellish, $700 gained with $5,000 lost.
What’s a stock broker ? i’m looking to venture into the stock market as well.
How much did you start with ?
Can you talk a lil about your journey to $23.7000? Starts, fails and risks?
@Eric J Corker how come
Made me teary-eyed when he was talking about learning to read by reading everything including candy wrappers. #ProudOfYou #Hope
